Abstract

With advent of new technologies, competition, and operational efficiency, supply chains have become more multifaceted and today there is a need for intelligent systems to provide real time visibility and operational efficiency. Smart pallet tracking uses Internet of Things (IoT) technologies such as RFID tags, GPS modules, wireless sensors and cloud-based research focus to track and monitor movement, location, condition and stock of pallets throughout a supply chain. This research aims  to analyse the effectiveness of tracking technology of smart pallets on inventory accuracy, loss reduction, warehouse operations and data-driven decision support. Quantitative research design was utilised in the study and a set of structured questionnaires were used. The study was based on quantitative research, through the distribution of a set of structured questionnaires to logistics, warehouse and inventory professionals in UAE fee zones. The results show that smart pallet tracking significantly improves inventory visibility, reduces manual effort and helps in reducing inventory discrepancies, resulting in a more efficient inventory management system. Finally, the paper presents a smart pallet tracking system implementation framework for the modern warehouse/distribution environment.
