General Insurance Research in the Age of Risk, Regulation, and Technology: A Bibliometric Mapping and Agenda for Future Inquiry

The general insurance industry is undergoing a profound transformation driven by the convergence of systemic risks, evolving regulatory frameworks, and accelerated technological innovation. This study addresses the critical need for a comprehensive overview by providing the first bibliometric mapping of general insurance research that explicitly integrates perspectives on risk, regulation, and technology from 2010 - 2024. Employing a two-tier methodological framework combining citation analysis, network mapping, and advanced performance metrics, this study synthesizes insights from 94 rigorously selected articles. The results reveal significant global diversity in research contributions, prominent clusters around digital innovation and InsurTech, and a temporal shift from foundational risk and regulatory topics to contemporary themes such as operational efficiency and regulatory technology (RegTech). The authors introduce the risk regulation technology (RRT) model, a conceptual framework that captures the dynamic interplay shaping organizational performance in insurance. Notable gaps remain, particularly in the need for empirical, theory-driven studies and cross-jurisdictional comparisons. This study advances the literature by clarifying the intellectual structure of the field and outlining a future research agenda centered on integrated, dynamic, and contextually adaptive frameworks for general insurance in an era of heightened risk, regulatory complexity, and technological disruption.
